A town and port in the county of Lincolnshire in eastern England, Boston has a population of around 58,000 and a history going back to Saxon times, when it grew up around a monastery founded by St Botolph. Boston was granted a charter by King John in 1204, after which it grew rapidly into an important port, though it fell into decline as a port when the River Witham became silted in the 15th century, recovering some 3 centuries later with the opening of the Grand Sluice in the 18th century.

Boston’s famous St Botolph’s church (also called “the Stump”), is the biggest parish church in England, its tower reaching a height of 272 feet.

Boston, Massachusetts, USA, was founded by a group who sailed from here to New England in 1630.
