Thirsk North Yorkshire: Located close to the south-western edge of the North Yorks Moors, Thirsk has a population of 4,703 (census 2001), it is in the district of Hambleton and is perhaps best known for its Flat Horseracing Racecourse. An ancient town Thirsk was listed in the Domesday Book and recorded as Tresche (from the Viking word for marsh). The town has two areas Thirsk and Old Thirsk (the area east of the River Cod Beck).
