Leamington Spa (or Royal Leamington Spa as it is properly known) is now almost joined to Warwick, the county town of Warwickshire. Leamington Spa has a population of almost 40,000, and a history stretching back to Anglo-Saxon times, getting its name from the Saxon for "farm on the River Leam". It was recorded in the Domesday Book where it was listed as Lamintone. While the beneficial properties of local waters were well known, even in Roman times, the town proper mostly developed during the 19th century, before this it was known as Leamington Priors.
