Taking its name from the large city of Leicester, the county of Leicestershire is a landlocked county in the central England region, it has a population of around 940,000 (the 21st highest in England), and an area of 832 square miles (the 28th largest). Leicestershire borders the counties of Northamptonshire, Rutland, Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Nottinghamshire, and Lincolnshire, the largest city is Leicester, which has a huge population of over 440,000.

Leicester: A large and populous city lying on the River Soar in Leicestershire, Leicester has an urban popluation of 441,000 and a history going back to Roman times, making it one of England's oldest cities. Loughborough: A famous university town located in the county of Leicestershire, Loughborough is in fact the second largest town in the county, with a population of around 58,000. Lutterworth: A small town located in the Harborough district of Leicestershire, Lutterworth has a population of about 8,000, and a history going back to Saxon times, probably getting its name from the Norse language. Melton Mowbray: A small market town to the north east of Leicester in Leicestershire, Melton Mowbray is most famous for its pork pies and its stilton cheese. Having a population of about 25,000, Melton Mowbray is still one of Leicestershire's largest towns, it is also an ancient place with a history going back to the Bronze and Iron Ages.
