A small market town to the north east of Leicester in Leicestershire, Melton Mowbray is most famous for its pork pies and its stilton cheese. Having a population of about 25,000, Melton Mowbray is still one of Leicestershire's largest towns, it is also an ancient place with a history going back to the Bronze and Iron Ages.
Possibly the site of an encampment during Roman times, it was certainly settled by the Saxons and the Danes, before the time of the Norman invasion. In the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as the only market town in Leicestershire, and is in fact the 3rd oldest in England.
