Formerly known as Bishop's Hatfield, Hatfield is located to the south of Welwyn Garden City in the county of Hertfordshire. Hatfield was once a Saxon settlement with the name Hetfelle. These days it is well known for its Hatfield House, built between 1607 and 1611 by Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury. Hatfield today has a population of around 30,000, and is a busy commuter town.
Hatfield House is the residence of the Marquess of Salisbury.
Hatfield can be reached from the A1(M), the A414 or the A1000, it is 3 miles from St Albans and 17 miles from London. Hatfield also has railway links with York and London Kings Cross (22 minute commuter service).
